Space Race Math...in Rolla!
Space Race Math (Mathematics Education for Gifted Secondary School Students) bridges the gap between elementary and high school mathematics for mathematically talented middle school students.
Space Race Math offers a curriculum written specifically for these mathematically talented students who are identified by means of a nomination process and accepted solely on the basis of ability determined by test score results. Once accepted, coursework is available to SRM-qualified students for up to three years. Space Race Math accepts nominations of current 4th, 5th and 6th grade students from educators and parents through the spring of each school year.
Parents are welcome to nominate their children (see link to the right). Once the nominations are made, information will be sent to you via email regarding the test details. This year, due to Covid-19, testing will be conducted online. Students receiving subsidized meals at school will receive a partial testing waiver.
Classes have met on Thursday afternoons from 4:00-6:30 p.m. on the Missouri S&T campus and at the Kaleidoscope Discovery Center. This opportunity is being offered through the Kaleidoscope Discovery Center here in Rolla.

An Introduction to Space Race Math
For 35 years, Space Race Math has offered a curriculum written specifically for these students, who are identified by means of a nomination process and accepted solely on the basis of ability. Coursework is offered by a highly trained, professional teaching staff. SRM programming is offered for up to three years, including two summer courses. It is an excellent middle-school math program designed for academically strong students wishing to move ahead in the mathematics area.
Many parents enroll their children in Space Race Math math classes because they are not sufficiently challenged in their middle school years (grades 5, 6, 7). In most middle schools, the traditional curriculum repeats the topics of elementary mathematics. Students with outstanding mathematical ability have already mastered these topics and tend to become bored and indifferent to mathematics when they are required to go through “the same old stuff” once again. Space Race Math was created to deal with this challenge and engage students in elements of mathematics that are new and stimulating to them.
Many students who qualify for SRM have never experienced the challenge of grappling with difficult mathematics concepts and building the discipline to master such concepts. Responses to student surveys indicate an improvement in students’ intellectual abilities as a result of participation in SRM. Such improvements include:
- Development of self-disciplined study habits
- Better time management and organization of time
- Transfer of logical problem-solving techniques to other academic areas
- A more positive approach to school
- Ability to participate in higher level mathematics coursework during high school
Each academic year, Space Race Math invites all public, parochial, independent, and home schools and parents to nominate students who are generally at or above the 98th percentile in mathematics and the 95th percentile in reading on the school’s regularly administered standardized tests. Students should also display such traits as persistence, curiosity, perception, superior reasoning ability, originality, motivation, independence, social maturity, emotional stability, and enthusiasm for mathematics. A student who displays such characteristics, but who is not doing well in math (possibly out of boredom), may very well be an excellent candidate for this program.
Interested students may be nominated by their teachers or parents, and should be scoring in the top 5% in mathematics and reading on standardized tests and show a serious interest in math.
