The weather is improving, vaccines are available, and the virus seems to be subsiding. We are all looking forward to being able to get together again and seeing everyone’s SMILES! We have missed them this past year!
On February 28th, the Missouri Future City Competition announced its winning team. This year the competition theme focused on “Living on the Moon” with teams of 6th-8th grade students addressing issues ranging from radiation to food supply in their presentations and models. Despite the current Covid challenges, teams recorded their timed presentations, sometimes from multiple locations in order to submit their entries. Dedicated judges from across Missouri interviewed the teams during live Zoom sessions and ultimately selected a winner to represent Missouri in the national competition in April. Congratulations to Altera Domi from St. Clair Middle School and their instructor, Jennifer Hawkins! We are so proud of you and know that you will represent Missouri well!
Providing STEAM opportunities in our region continues to be a primary focus of the Kaleidoscope. Through the generous support of our patrons and numerous grants, the Kaleidoscope continues to support four area robotics programs (Newburg, Dent R-III, Richland, and Vienna) with equipment and afterschool instruction. We are grateful to our 4-H partners who also assist in the support of the Richland robotics outreach program.
Additionally, our new technology/robotics AmeriCorps VISTA position has been approved for a start date in April. We look forward to building capacity and sustainability in this area going forward. If you know anyone willing to serve in this role for the organization, please send them our way. We are excited about the new partnerships and opportunities they will cultivate!
